Tamil Film Industry's Big Move: Revenue-Share Model for Big-Budget Films (2025)

The Tamil Film Producers Council has made a groundbreaking decision, mandating a revenue-share model for big-budget films. This move, announced during a general body meeting in Chennai, aims to address the financial challenges faced by the industry. With actors and leading technicians sharing both profits and losses with producers, the council believes this will help mitigate the impact of declining theatrical revenues and the rise of Over-The-Top (OTT) and satellite businesses. To further protect theatrical revenue, the council has also introduced staggered OTT release windows, ensuring that films with leading actors are not released on OTT platforms for at least eight weeks, mid-tier actors for six weeks, and small-budget films for four weeks. Additionally, the council has formed a Film Release Regulation Committee to oversee the release of smaller projects, ensuring they receive adequate theatre access. The council has also taken a stand against the promotion of web series, urging actors, directors, and technicians to prioritize films. They have called for unions to withhold work cooperation from violators and advised theatre owners to avoid screening their films. The South Indian Artistes' Association and the Theatre Owners' Association have joined forces with the TFPC to combat unauthorized YouTube channels and private organizations conducting award ceremonies or music shows without permission. The council has also initiated legal proceedings to secure all rights and royalties due to producers, expressing gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government for key concessions and support.
